What is an electrical panel upgrade in a UK home?

People often search for an electrical panel upgrade in Manchester, but in UK homes the part is called a consumer unit, or fuse box. It is the box where the incoming supply splits into separate circuits for your lights, sockets, cooker and shower.

An upgrade means replacing it with a modern unit. Current units are normally metal-cased and include RCD protection, which cuts the power very quickly if electricity leaks to earth. The electrician also tests every circuit, checks the earthing and bonding, and records the results.

The number you may have seen elsewhere, a 200 amp panel, is a US figure. Most UK homes have a single-phase supply, and the box is sized by the number of circuits, not by that figure.

When should a consumer unit be replaced?

Not every old box needs replacing at once, but some situations point that way.

  • The unit has rewirable fuses, a brown or cream plastic case, or no RCD protection.
  • An electrical inspection report (EICR) says it is unsatisfactory.
  • It is hot, cracked, damp or marked by burning.
  • You are adding an EV charger, a new kitchen or an extension and there is no spare capacity.
  • You are buying, selling or renting out the property and the electrics need to be in order.

If you are unsure, ask for an inspection first. It costs less than a new unit and tells you what is really needed. In an emergency, see our page on an emergency electrician in Manchester.

What changes the price of a new consumer unit?

We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on the house. The main factors are these.

  • The number of circuits and the size of unit needed.
  • The type of protection fitted, such as RCBOs on each circuit, and whether surge protection is included.
  • The condition of the existing cables, earthing and bonding, which may need correcting.
  • Where the unit sits. A hallway cupboard is easy. A cellar or tight space under the stairs takes longer.
  • Whether the meter tails (the thick cables between the meter and the unit) must be replaced or lengthened.
  • Extras added at the same time, such as a circuit for an EV charger.

You will get a written quote that lists what is included, and any extra work found is agreed with you before it is added.

A standard replacement is often completed within a day, but larger houses and awkward layouts can take longer. Your electrician should give you an estimate after seeing the existing box.

  1. The installation is inspected before anything is switched off.
  2. The power goes off for part of the day. Plan for fridges, freezers, broadband routers and anything medical that relies on mains power.
  3. The old unit is removed. Each circuit is labelled, connected and tested.
  4. The new unit is tested, and you are shown the main switch and how to reset a tripped breaker.
  5. You receive an electrical installation certificate.

In England this work falls under Part P of the Building Regulations, so it should be carried out by a registered electrician or reported to building control. Ask which route applies and keep the certificate with your house papers.

What do Manchester homes usually need?

Victorian and Edwardian terraces often have a consumer unit that was fitted later into an old cupboard or cellar, with wiring behind it of mixed age. Semis in areas such as Chorlton, Sale and Prestwich have often been updated once or twice, so you may find old and new cables together.

Damp matters here. A cellar or outside wall can corrode terminals, so a good electrician looks closely for that while the box is open. Landlords in England must have the electrics inspected at least every five years, and a poor report often leads to a new unit.

If the cables behind the box are the real problem, see house rewiring in Manchester. Or return to the home page to see everything we cover.

What do you need?

Questions about electrical in Manchester

Is a fuse box the same as a consumer unit?

In everyday talk, yes. Old fuse boxes use rewirable or cartridge fuses. A modern consumer unit uses switches that trip, normally with RCDs. If your box has fuse wire, or a plastic case from many years ago, it is worth having it inspected.

Do I need a new consumer unit for an EV charger?

Not always. A charger needs its own circuit, protection and enough spare capacity. If your current box has no spare way or lacks modern protection, a new unit is often the sensible route. An electrician will check this when they look at your installation.

Will the power be off for long?

The power is usually off for several hours, but not all day. Ask for a likely window before the day. Plan around fridges and freezers, routers, home working and any medical equipment that depends on mains power, and tell the electrician about anything important.

What paperwork should I receive?

You should get an electrical installation certificate, along with confirmation that the work was notified under Part P if it was not done through a registered scheme. Keep both with your house papers. Solicitors, landlords and insurers sometimes ask for them later, for example when you sell the house or renew a tenancy.

Should I choose RCBOs or a standard split-load unit?

Both can meet the rules. RCBOs protect each circuit separately, so a fault on one circuit does not switch off the whole house. They usually cost more. Your electrician can explain which option suits your house and how it affects the quote.
